Greetings all ye gamers, and welcome to another fine list of games to keep you entertained. Everyone loves to play games with friends, and the market of online games has been expanding in leaps and bounds over the last few years. The criteria for a spot on this list are based on accessibility, popularity, and of course, a healthy helping of personal opinion to round things out.
5. Lord of the Rings: Online
Suppose you are a big MMO fan, but you don’t have a big budget. Perhaps ramen noodles have lost their appeal and you need to scale back a little on your entertainment budget. LotR:O is a pretty decent alternative to Blizzard’s behemoth World of Warcraft for those who just like the play style. Of course it also comes with all the elves, hobbits and orks you would expect from a Lord of the Rings property, as well as a fairly decent storyline.
4. Team Fortress 2
Team Fortress 2, or as it’s affectionately ( and sometimes not so affectionately) known, Hat Fortress 2 is still going strong nearly five years after it’s release. This is pretty unheard of for an FPS, they tend to fall by the wayside pretty quickly when a new one comes out, but some how this class based competitive shooter has held its ground. Maybe it’s the free to play model they recently adopted, maybe it’s the hats, or maybe it’s just a fun little shooter, but TF2 has managed to hang on tight in spite of its age.
3. Call of Duty: Black Ops 2
Call of Duty certainly seems to have its own appeal for a lot of people, and the 2012 release of Black Ops 2 was no exception to this. The Top selling FPS of the year, Black Ops 2 marks the fourth year in a row in which Activision came out on top for top selling shooter. It’s not this gamer’s cup of tea, but numbers don’t lie.
2. Guild Wars 2
The much lauded “Wow killer” that is Guild Wars 2 has a lot going for it. No monthly fee, expansive combat system and a finely honed personal storyline for antisocial players are all pretty strong elements to bring to the table. While it hasn’t lived up to the hopes of people who want to see the king of the MMO castle fall, it has carved out a solid niche for itself in the MMO arena, and should not be ignored as a game to watch.
1. World of Warcraft
You can’t talk about online games without talking about World of Warcraft. It’s everywhere; even your grandma probably has an account. In spite of the fact it’s getting long in the tooth at nearly 9 years of life, the big WoW is still going strong. Maybe you’re a player of the game, or maybe you want to see it punted from its lofty throne, but there is no denying that World of Warcraft is still sitting pretty at the top of online gaming.
I have no doubt that there are games you’d have liked to see on this list, but I only have 5 spots to work with, and not everything can make the cut. On the bright side however, there is a lovely comment section, so as long as you keep it nice and civil, feel free to suggest what you feel your top five hottest online games are for the year.
