Roll up, roll up! Read all about it!
2012 was full of newsworthy tid-bits, from huge political scandals to sporting achievements. We had topsy-turvy weather, technological advances which unfortunately turned out to be a little less amazing than first promised, and crazy dances that swept across the globe.
Here are five of the top news stories of last year, according to Bing’s most searched.
1 The dawn of the iPhone 5
It was meant to be amazing, and at first it was, but then a few little gremlins turned up and the whole thing was a bit of a damp squib. Apple’s revolutionary 4G smart phone was hotly anticipated, quickly following the updated 4S. Thousands queued outside local Apple stores worldwide, to get their hands on the slightly bigger handset, holding their precious box in the air as they finally purchased the most up to date phone in the world. Following a long period of time where rumors were abound about the phone, what it would do and how amazing it was all going to be, the whole thing turned out to be slightly disappointing and really quite expensive.
2 2012 US elections
Tuesday 6 November 2012 is the historic date that President Barak Obama was elected to spend a second term in office as President of the United States of America. Worldwide interest followed the presidential campaign, as it ran to the wire. Hot news from China to Hawaii and everywhere in-between, the TV and general media coverage of this historic event was huge.
3 London Olympics
The London Olympics were hailed a huge success, from the inventive opening ceremony, with the Queen and James Bond skydiving into the stadium, to huge array of sporting action, and the musical extravaganza to end the whole shebang. Archery, swimming, relay, running, shot-put, javelin, you name it, we saw it, and boy did we enjoy it.
4 Honey Boo Boo
Here Comes Honey Boo Boo was the surprise hit of 2012, and became huge news as it hit TV screens nationwide. The show follows 7 year old beauty pageant applicant Alana Thompson, aka Honey Boo Boo and her family, mainly focusing on their daily lives. Screening on TLC channel in the US, the show has been massively popular.
5 Gangnam Style
Most of the world had no idea what they were singing about, but sing along they did – and PSY’s massive hit towards the latter end of 2012 ensured holiday resorts, cities and TV shows all over the world were doing the dance. Did you do it? Go on, admit it, everyone has at some point!
Last year was full of news, including Hurricane Sandy lashing the US East Coast, to name just one. What news stories of the last 12 months stand out for you? For me, it has to be the Olympics, watching the events unfold over those few summer months was really the high point of my year, and coming from the UK, it really was something to be proud of.
