It’s amazing just how connected we are to one another in the present day in age. What were once relationships built on hand-written letters are now digitized through cellular phones and touch-screen tablets. But what technological advancement is bringing all of us closer together more each day? The answer my friends, is the internet and more specifically, social networking websites. Even though some of the most well known social media sites may be to be expected, one might be surprised as to what some of the other sites include.
Although overtaken by Facebook in popularity in April, 2008, Myspace.com is currently in the Top 5 Social Media Sites on the web. Myspace, a profile building website, strongly emphasizes music promotion and streaming as a part of it’s key components. Myspace is owned by Specific Media LLC and pop music superstar, Justin Timberlake. Recently, Myspace went under a very original redesign that can be viewed by signing up for a free account over at new.myspace.com
Number four on the list is the relatively new website, Pinterest.com. Especially popular with women, Pinterest is a photo sharing website that is built off of a pinboard style interface. Pinterest allows users to create and manage theme-based collections of images such as interests, events, hobbies, fads, and many more. In addition to this, members are able to like photos they enjoy or ‘re-pin’ them to their own Pinterest boards on their profile.
- 97% of the site’s Facebook “likes” are by females
- In the U.S., the most popular categories are Fashion, Desserts, Clothes and Birthdays
LinkedIn.com or rather, LinkedIn Corporation, is a social networking website aimed at people in the professional and occupational world. Since it’s launch in 2003, LinkedIn has been mainly used for career based networking. The site allows you to create a profile that doubles as a digital resume and is available in a multitude of languages. Thanks to LinkedIn, hundred of thousands of business professionals are able to connect online and build work relationships.
- 2 new members join every second
- Revenues for 2011 reached $522 million
- LinkedIn is the 36th most visited website in the world
The number two social media site is Twitter.com. Twitter is not only a social networking service but it also provides what is known as microblogging. Users on Twitter are able to compose text-based messages that are 140 characters or less (these short texts are called ‘tweets’). Twitter began in 2006 and since then, users post on average an accumulation of over 340 million tweets a day.
- 175 million are sent tweets a day
- The average Twitter user has 27 followers
- Top 3 countries on Twitter are USA at 107 million, Brazil 33 million and Japan at nearly 30 million
Finally, we come to what will probably not surprise anyone- Facebook.com. As of September 2012, Facebook has had over one billion active users, and the numbers continue to rise each day. Founded by college students at the time, Mark Zuckerberg, Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes created Facebook as a social networking community strictly for Harvard University students. However, they quickly expanded, so much now that Facebook is currently the second most visited website on the internet, topped only by Google.com. Facebook has become the premier ‘build-your-own profile’ website on the world wide web, and continues to grow more popular each day.
- Each day Facebook users spend 10.5 billion minutes (almost 20,000 years) online on the social network
- An average of 3.2 billion likes and comments are posted every day
- 58% of users return to the site daily
